To 'help' someone with depression is not standing at the top of the mountain looking down and urging the one depressed to climb harder. Calling out to them to push forward, to grip tighter to the cliff and work harder. No matter the amount of encouragement you call out to the person, it doesn't help them climb.

To walk with someone with depression is to be under/behind them on the mountain side holding onto the same cliff’s edge, the same muscles burning, holding on for dear-life with them. To inch forward together at their pace, being there to support them if they slip, to have the patience and love, to remind them that they are not alone as they desperately grip on to the side of this cliff.
